About the Bike Squad and Clean Team
Clean and Safe Services
Two crews managed by the JSID provide supplemental ‘clean and safe’ services within the District. The JSID oversees a 12-member bike squad, through a contract with Allied Barton Security Services (www.alliedbarton.com or to be considered for a position visit www.greatsecurityjobs.com). The JSID, on behalf of the Downtown Investment District, also manages a 3 person sidewalk sweeping crew that covers the Downtown, as defined by the DID, six days a week.

The JSID’s red-shirted bike ambassadors patrol Northwest and Downtown Lancaster on foot and bicycle. Squad members perform three important functions to enhance the quality of life for people who live, work and visit the District. They are trained to serve as community ambassadors, aiding people with directions and pointing out local amenities. Squad members also routinely identify nuisance issues such as excessive trash, graffiti and city maintenance issues . Importantly, because of their visibility, the squad acts as additional ‘eyes and ears’ in the community, providing an enhanced sense of security, often providing support, such as traffic control, to emergency responders.
Squad members patrol the District seven days a week, with approximately 15 hours of coverage Monday – Saturday and 8 hours on Sunday. For more information, contact David Aichele, JSID Operations Director, at dtaichele@jsidlancaster.org or 717-394-0783.

The JSID manages the DID contract with Service Group Inc. (www.servicegroupinc.com) to provide supplemental sidewalk sweeping services given the heavy foot traffic that occurs in Downtown and the importance of keeping pedestrian corridors clean. A crew of two full-time, one part-time employees cover the Downtown six days a week. Wearing visible blue shirts with the DID logo, the crew utilizes a combination of mechanical equipment and dust pans/brooms to keep public areas free of litter. In the Fall, this crew takes on the major task of collecting fallen leaves on sidewalks, and the crew also assists with clearing ADA ramps during snowstorms. Importantly, property owners in the DID, as in all parts of the City, retain primary responsibility for maintaining their sidewalks.
